DO NOT BELIEVE IT!!!

It starts out with some scenics of God-knows-where, then back to Hawthorne Drive. But, (and here’s the kicker) some things just do not look right. The front yard lawn looks green, but the side and back yards are all rocks and dirt. The tree in the front is tiny. The awning over the kitchen window does not exist.

And ain’t that entertaining? I think this is probably the reel that should have been in the can labeled “No 2″. But I’m more than willing to listen to everybody else’s opinions on the proper sequence. I decline to accept responsibility for this error.
Should we blame Donald?

Lots of other stuff on the reel that doesn’t look all that familiar to me and much that does. One of the familiar things is another Peach Days parade. Comments! Comments! Comments!

The first part of the movie is early 1960 positively. I left Brigham City 10 May 1960 to join the Navy. There are two views of my 1957 Renault Dauphine which went with me. The first view of the car is the probably the morning after the engine caught on fire when I was driving it home from one of the local “watering holes”. It was a Friday night and I was feeling no pain and was wondering why the fire was following me home. When I realized it was the car on fire, I stopped and dove into a ditch and waited for the car to explode. I finally put the fire out by throwing dirt on the engine. Larry and I pushed the car home next morning and the he rewired the engine with whatever Dad had available in the house. It ran fine until I traded it in for a sports car later that year in Honolulu (1961 Austin Healy Sprite which I had to get rid of when I married Marcia).

I also think I recognized Bob Werling with you guys at a picnic. Much later I think I saw Jim and Walker Keenan sitting on the patio.

At the beginning it looked like Dad was filming birds on what looked like the Great Salt Lake.

Did you guys go to Chicago that summer and come back through the Dakotas and Wyoming?

Then we have a quick trip back to Hawthorne Drive, a quick trip up into the hills (Bear Lake?) and a return to Hawthorne Drive.  ME, Don, and I in “sunday-go-to-meetin’” clothes and we’re off to Little America (In Wyoming, I think. Penguins, anyway.).  And now back home to take Phil (in uniform?) off the the airport in Salt Lake City.  Where Phil gets on a United Airlines plane with four big round iron engines and propellers.  My, how times have changed.

Next we’re off to somewhere (Aunt Anna’s or Aunt Dorothy’s?  Any guesses?) and back to snow in Hidden Village.  Ray makes a snowman.  Then off to another lake, somewhere.

I hope somebody has a better idea as to what’s going on here than do I.  If this is 1963 (or later) then I’m living at the Delta Sig house in Logan and out of touch with what’s going on

I can say almost positively that at least some of the scenes were taken in 1961. That is probably me getting on the plane in Salt Lake in uniform. I did that twice. The first time was February of 1961 and the second in May 1964. February 1961 was the first time I took leave from the USS Elkhorn, which had just arrived in San Diego from Pearl Harbor. I met Marcia the next week at a dance at the officer’s club. That is definitely Mike and Dorothy’s home at 2510 S. Gaffey in San Pedro. They could see all the way south to Dana Point from that window. You all probably went to that house after my wedding in Rosemead on 17 May 1961. That was the house I stayed in the previous night and Aunt Dorothy gave me the special wedding present of the bullet I was shot with at Pearl Harbor.

I have one question. When did Dad get rid of that Edsel? That might help date the production as well.

Well, we had the 1958(?) Edsel station wagon and the 1953 Ford sedan when we got there (Summer of 1959?). We kept the Edsel through my high school years but traded the 1953 Ford for a 1957(?) Ford around 1960-61. Sometime before I started college (I think) at Utah State in Sep 1962, the Edsel disappeared and was replaced by a 1962(?) blue Ford station wagon. And the 1957 Ford sedan was replaced by a 1964(?) blue Ford E-150 pick-up. In 1964-65(?) the station wagon was replaced by a Mercury sedan, year unknown.

Note that a few of the pictures had some corruption issues (requiring me to do some data recovery from the discs) so the “thumbnail” for those images does not display.  However, the image will display despite the issues with the file itself.

Family Comments on the Photos

I think that is a picture of the General Mitchell leaving the Navy Pier in San Diego in November of 1946. That was the start of the trip for mom and her (then) three boys enroute to China. I don’t know who took the picture. We had been staying in San Pedro so maybe Grandpa Young brought us down there.
The picture is taken from the south side of the Navy pier after we had backed out from the north side. The USS Midway is presently permantently moored there. By the way, mom had bought me a toy truck to play with on the trip and your father grabbed it from me and threw it over the side into the water.

We had a battalion of Marines riding all the way with us to China. We spent Thanksgiving day at anchor in Honolulu and then sailed to Guam where we, and the Marines, changed ships. We sailed from Guam on the President Adams to Manila, then Shanghai and got off in Tsingtao on December 18. The Marines went a little further north to Tientsin (sp?). That port was the terminus for the rail line from Peking. The Marines were sent to provide security for that rail line. It is my understanding that they did take some combat casualties in completeing that mission. I had not thought of that episode in years. Your dad might be able to research that battalion as it obviously came from Camp Pendleton.

I tried to read the name of the ship on the placard on the side of the bridge. Best I could see was it might be Mitchell. I will be commenting on some of the other pictures as I get a chance. This one was probably the shortest narrative. If you have any questions or need clarification let me know.

I’m working on a very slow connection and it is taking me forever. Will stop here for now and try to find the photos here so I can get a better (and faster) look at them.

It is of the USNS Gen Walter H. Gordon arriving at Fort Mason (San Francisco) in June of 1952 with, among about 2500-3000 others, about 500 men of the 40th Infantry Division. The 40ID is better known as the California Army National Guard.Dad (who did not make that restful ocean voyage with Mom and her three stooges) was not sure what ship they were on, but “thought” it was the USNS Gordon. Phil was there. If he says it was the USNS General William Mitchell (AP-114), I’ll take his word for it.

By the way, please take the dates on the photos as guesses or approximations. None of the guesses were made by yours truly. Some are from Mom, some from Grandma, some from Dad, and some from Aunt Anna. Just do not ask me to remember who made which guesses.

For some help in assigning approximate dates, Phil suggests these milestones: 29 Jan 1945 (Larry born) family living in Wilmington, CA and Grandma Ollie comes out to assist Mom (duration of stay unknown but I think she did work in LA for a while). 7 May 1945 (V-E Day) Family still in Wilmington. 15 Aug 1945 (V-J Day) Family is in Galveston, TX (traveled by train from SoCal). Date unknown – Mom and the three stooges leave for Tsingtao, China to be with Dad.

Picture # 24/49 is Ellen Bluett, Olive Riddle Ludvigsen Jacobsen, Philip Riddle, Martha Riddle
This picture, I was told by Grandma” was taken in front of Uncle Ed’s Store”. Now in this case, I do mean Uncle Ed. Uncle Ed was her brother. I guess she called him “Uncle Ed” for her children. I also spoke to Lauren Holbrook, who is Ed Bluett’s granddaughter. She said that her Granddad owned a store in Chicago. We talked about what pictures she had and I had, but her’s were destroyed in a house fire

Who are the people in 15/49? I assume they are Nellie Hollingsworth and her mother and mother-in-law? Names?
Who are the people in 14/49? I assume they are Martha and Margaret’s Grandma’s. But what are their names?
If anyone is interested, I can fix the #40/49 and 25/49 pictures in photoshop.
